Evilution is an evocative, multi-sensory extravaganza taking place at the Austin Music Hall on October 22 and 23, 1999. It is certain to spark the imagination of the city of Austin and her citizens and the interest of those around the country who keep an eye on the Austin scene. It is a multi-disciplinary project whose key artistic personnel are:
The event itself consists of three components: (1) Pre-show DJ presentation by Ambiosis, which will set the ambient mood for the (2) Multi-sensorial arts performance, which is followed by a (3) Post-performance rave by FiLOhi. The two-night event will run from 9pm until approximately 3am nightly. It is certain to be lively, to say the least! The middle portion of the evening tells the story of Lucifer's fall from Heaven based on Sufi legend, which is somewhat different from versions we normally know in this country. In addition to being appropriate for the Halloween season, our rendition beautifully blends the spirit of the story sans words: Govinda's haunting violin and powerful percussion move the storyline in tandem with costumes that are best described as sculptures; film and digitized art which will be projected on three giant screens ground the production at the stage's backbone; and a tantalizing fire show/circus art presentation by local upstarts Tantien spices the drama. And there's more: An Artist's Market to sell original art by project artists; a Merchandising area to sell T-shirts and CDs of the music created specifically for Evilution as well as the ongoing work of the musicians involved; the Lava Lounge, a carefully-crafted area for audience members to chill out in during the evening; and Projections from 6 projectors (3 per side wall off the stage) which will show logos of sponsors for the event and original visual art by project personnel. Evilution itself will be Webcast to reach an even larger audience. In addition to enticing the minds and spirits of the citizens of Austin, Evilution serves another purpose: a portion of our proceeds will benefit the SIMS Foundation, a local nonprofit organization which offers low-cost mental health services to Austin music professionals and their families. Nearly everyone involved in this project has, over the years, contributed to SIMS in one way or another. We further our support with financial contribution from the project and by utilizing the event as an avenue for continued public education about the many services the SIMS Foundation provides for the Austin community and its health. |
